NotesPortion of central Europe. Independent under King Wenceslaus, 10th century. From 1355 part of the Holy Roman Empire. From 1526 under Hapsburg rule: part of the Austrian Empire first as a kingdom and then ruled directly by the Hapsburg emperor. Joined with Slovakia 1918 to form Czechoslovakia. Occupied by Nazi Germany from 1938. Again a province of Czechoslovakia after 1945. With the division of Czechoslovakia into Slovakia and the Czech Republic, 1993, the region formed central and western parts of the Czech Republic.
