CountrySoviet Union
NotesAlso known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R., USSR). The Soviet Union came into being following the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917-21. It is traditionally considered to be the successor of the Russian Empire. It was established in December 1922 as the union of the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Transcaucasian Soviet republics ruled by Bolshevik parties. It was the largest country in the world when it existed. Following political and economic reforms in the late 1980s, it dissolved in 1991. In its final years it consisted of 15 republics - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia (now Belarus), Estonia, Georgia, Kazakstan, Kirgiziya (now Kyrgyzstan), Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia (now Moldova), Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, there were a collection of states commonly known as 'the former Soviet Union', alligned only through a loose organization known as the 'Commonwealth of Independent States'.
