DescriptionA book containing copies of legal documents relating to the courts and administration of the Archbishop of Canterbury in the time of George Abbot, Archbishop of Canterbury 1610-1633. The documents derive especially from the Court of Arches, the Court of Audience, and the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, and from the work of the Vicar General of Canterbury. Included are appeals, allegations, libels, commissions, monitions, sentences, excommunications, letters dimissory, testimonials, licences, collations, institutions and many other forms of documents. Many were issued or heard by Sir Henry Marten (c.1561-1641) as Official Principal of the Court of Arches. Also included are documents in cases heard by Sir Charles Caesar (1590-1642), Judge of the Court of Audience. The documents appear to have been collected to serve as forms and precedents and often omit the full names of the parties involved as well as the dates of the documents.c.1624-c.1628, including cases and documents dated 1624 and 1628 (ff. 27v, 34r).

ff. 1r-129r. Documents. At ff. 121r-123r is a libel against Theophilus Field (1574-1636), Bishop of St. David's and afterwards of Hereford, concerning the living of Lydd, Kent, 1627 or 1628.

CustodialHistoryMSS. 691 and 712 are similar volumes, probably concecutive though written in different hands. Both are recorded, with the same location, in the catalogue of the personal library of Thomas Tenison, Archbishop of Canterbury 1695-1715: 'Abbot's (A.B.) Collectio instrumentorum, fol. MS' and 'Chartarum ad AEp. Cant. spectantium exemplificatio, fol' (LR/F/16, ff. 2r, 69r).
Both are recorded amongst the manuscripts of Archbishop Tenison in David Wilkins' catalogue of the Lambeth manuscripts dated 1720 (LR/F/40).
