Description | Papers relating to dialogue between the Church of England and the Methodist Church |
AdminHistory | Meetings between representatives of the Church of England and the Methodist Church began in 1956. An interim statement was issued in 1958, and a report, Conversations between the Church of England and the Methodist Church, in 1963. On the basis of this report and subsequent consultations in the dioceses, the Anglican-Methodist Unity Commission was set up in 1965 to prepare a scheme of unity. An interim statement, Towards reconciliation, was issued in 1967 and a report, Anglican-Methodist Unity in 1968. The scheme failed in 1969 when it failed to secure the required majority in the Convocations. The Anglican Co-Chairmen were G.K.A. Bell, Bishop of Chichester (1956-58), H.J. Carpenter, Bishop of Oxford (1958-63), and R.W. Stopford, Bishop of London (1965-68). |
