DescriptionA collection of documents, statistics and other information concerning Spain, especially its financial and military strength, in sixteen books.
The collection was made by, or for, Sir John Smythe (c.1533-1607) during his embassy to Spain, 1576-77. Smythe's signature is found at the end of each book (ff. 11v, 16v, 22v, 28v, 43v, 51r, 72r, 81r, 90r, 106v,135r, 152r, 161v, 177r, 184r).

CustodialHistoryFrom the 'Carew-Sheldon' manuscripts. Recorded [as item 71] in the 'Carew-Sheldon' catalogue dated 1664: 'Sir Jo. Smyths collections in Spaine written in Spanish language; folio' (Bodleian Library, Tanner MS. 275a, f. 6r ). These manuscripts were acquired by Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677), Archbishop of Canterbury. All, or nearly all, were previously owned by George Carew, 1st Earl of Totnes (1555-1629). See M. R. James, 'The Carew manuscripts', English Historical Review, vol 42, 1927, pp. 261-267, and M. R.
