TitlePorteus, Beilby (1731-1809)
DescriptionThe papers of Beilby Porteus, bishop of London, 1787-1809, consist principally of files of correspondence arranged in alphabetical order of correspondent or subject. The correspondence relates mainly to the administration of the diocese of London, particularly to the attempt to enforce the residence of the clergy following the Residence Act of 1803. There are a few papers relating to Porteus' earlier career, for instance his account of the meeting of convocation in 1775, and papers on papists in the diocese of Chester in 1778-81. In addition, the collection includes visitation returns, 1790, libri cleri, 1794-9, collections for French refugee clergy, 1793, and ordination examination papers, 1794-1807.
FindingAidsCatalogue descriptions based on typescript catalogue produced by Melanie Barber, December 1994, which combined a description of volumes with an index comprising correspondents and a selective index of place and subject. The visitation returns and returns for the French clergy were indexed under the name of the clergyman making the return. No attempt was made to index the contents of the returns. Descriptions of returns for specific parishes are based on the typescript 'Index of the London diocesan returns in Lambeth Palace Library' by M. Barber (1991).
