TitleCompton Commission Report: Diocesan Organisation in Greater London
Date24 March 1975-Aug 1976
DescriptionCorrespondence on the work and report of the Commission on Diocesan Organisation in Greater London, presided over by Sir Edmund Compton. The Commission was appointed by Archbishop Donald Coggan (in his capacity as Joint President of the General Synod), following a conference at Lambeth Palace on 16 July 1975 involving the bishops of London, Southwark, Chelmsford, St. Albans, Rochester and the suffragan bishop of Croydon. The Commission's purpose was to consider the future organisation of dioceses in the Greater London area, including the possibility of a new metropolitical province. The publication of its report in July 1976 led to significant controversy, and was much criticised by Ellison. A copy of the report is contained in the file.
