ActivityCarthusian monastery founded 1371, closed 1535. The site was subsequently used by nobility and royalty. In 1611 Thomas Sutton founded a hospital on the site and in his will bequeathed money to maintain a chapel, hospital (almshouses) and school. The school moved to Godalming, Surrey, in 1872 (its buildings subsequently acquired for St Bartholomew's Hospital medical school). The pensioners remain.
