DescriptionCorrespondence and papers of Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677), Archbishop of Canterbury 1663-77. Included are papers relating to the plague and fire of London, the second Anglo-Dutch war, and the role of the Archbishop as Visitor of Dulwich College and All Souls' College, Oxford.
With the exception of ff. 21-22, 25-27, 30-31 the papers comprise drafts or copies of out-letters from Sheldon in the hand of his secretary Miles Smith (c.1618-1672). Many were copied into Sheldon's Register.


f. 1. Monition from Sheldon to the Master, Warden and Fellows of God's Gift College in Dulwich [Dulwich College] not to make any appointment to office during the visitation in progress without the Archbishop's consent. 22 April 1664.

f. 2. Letter from Sheldon to each of the Bishops of England and Wales, conveying the command of Charles II that in each diocese two or more clergymen should be found for service as chaplains in the fleet under the command of James, Duke of York. Lambeth House, February 1664/5. Addressed 'To the Bishop of London. The like to each Bishop of England and Wales'. England declared war on the Dutch in March 1665.

ff. 3-6. Papers concerning a survey of hospitals and almshouses in England and Wales, 1665.
The survey was occasioned by the need to accommodate seamen and others maimed at sea in the navy during the second Anglo-Dutch war and by reports of mismanagement. For the original letters and instructions sent to Sheldon on behalf of Charles II, 16-21 June 1665, see CM VI/ 46, 47, 150. ff. 3-4. Letter from Sheldon to each of the Bishops of England and Wales, conveying the instructions of Charles II for a survey of all hospitals in the Province of Canterbury. Enclosed is a list of nine questions concerning each hospital; returns were to be sent to Sheldon. 26 June 1665. Addressed 'For the Lord Bishop of London. The like to each Bishop of the Province'.
f. 5. Letter from Sheldon to the Bishop of London [Humphrey Henchman] conveying instructions of Charles II (see ff. 3-4) and requiring Henchman to send copies to all the bishops in the Province of Canterbury. 26 June 1665. Endorsed 'His Maiesties instructions about hospitals...'.

f. 11. Letter from Sheldon to the Archbishop of York [Richard Sterne] sending a copy of his letter to the Bishop of London (ff. 9-10) so that Sterne may take similar action in the Province of York in accordance with the King's commands. 1 August 1665. Text also in Reg. Sheldon 2, f. 206v.
f. 12. Licence for burials in the parish of Greenwich in a churchyard not yet consecrated, being part of Blackheath adjoining to the pesthouse. 22 August 1665.
ff. 13-14. Two letters from Sheldon to Simon Lloyd, Rector of Llanynis, and others, concerning collections made in the Diocese of Bangor for the relief of those infected by plague and the transmission of sums raised during the vacancy of the see of Bangor. 20 October 1665. Related correspondence is in CM VI.
ff. 15-17. Letter from Sheldon to [Sir William Merrick], Judge of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, concerning disorders, including the spread of infection, arising from the granting of multitudes of administrations and probates of wills. Sheldon orders the revocation of surrogations and the suspension of granting any administrations or probates of noncupative or unsigned wills for at least 14 days. All Souls College, Oxford, 25 Nov. 1665. With the same instructions given by the Privy Council to be transmitted to Sir William Merrick (for the Prerogative Court), Sir Richard Chaworth (for London) and Dr. John Exton (for Westminster). Letter from Sheldon to [Sir Giles Sweit], Dean of the Arches, and [Sir William Merrick], Judge of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, instructing them that the Court of Arches and the Prerogative Court should not be removed out of London in view of the concourse of persons in contact with infected persons or goods. 16 January 1665/6. Joint letter from Sheldon and [Humphrey Henchman], Bishop of London, to the Stationers' Company, requiring the Company to observe its ancient rules and customs in the binding of apprentices and to supply details of printers in London and their apprentices. 24 March 1665/6. f. 20. Letter from Sheldon to all the bishops in the Province of Canterbury urging them to promote a collection for the distressed inhabitants of Newport, Shropshire, following a disastrous fire, in accordance with letters patent of Charles II. Lambeth House, 23 May 1666. Text also in Reg. Sheldon 2, ff. 212v-213r.

ff. 21-22. Privy Council letter (original) to Sheldon instructing him to transmit to all the bishops in the Province of Canterbury the King's command that almsmen's places vacant in all hospitals are to be reserved for those maimed or rendered unable to work by service in the navy. 28 July 1666. Order of the King in Council (original) requiring Sheldon to ascertain through the bishops in the Province of Canterbury the sums collected in each parish for the relief of those who have suffered distress in the Fire of London, and to make arrangements for the funds to be sent to the Lord Mayor of London. 7 November 1666. signed by Sir John Nicholas, Clerk of the Privy Council.
