TitleDean of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge
Date11th August 1958-6th December 1962
DescriptionCorrespondence of Hugh Montefiore during his incumbency as Dean of Gonville and Caius College. The bulk of the file contains letters exchanged with Lord Timothy Beaumont regarding Churchill College Chapel. After the founding of Churchill College in 1958 Montefiore discovered that the college's administration did not plan to include a chapel on the grounds. Montefiore established a fund to build a college chapel and enlisted the financial aid of Lord Beaumont. The fund was protested against by some of the college's fellows, including the biologist Francis Crick. In 1962 it was settled that the fund be used to buy land on which a chapel could be built and run independently from the college whilst still serving as a campus chapel. Also enclosed are a memorandum on the chapel situation dated December 1961, a letter from J.S. Morrison (senior tutor at Churchill College) informing Montefiore of his planned resignation, and a letter from theologian Charles Earl Raven regarding Montefiore's essay on Christology.
