DescriptionA history of Croydon by Andrew Coltee Ducarel (1713-1785), Lambeth Librarian. Written in 1755, with additions made in 1756.

The presentation copy to Thomas Herring, Archbishop of Canterbury. Not in Ducarel's hand, but with his autograph additions and signature. Inserted are an original document concerning lodgings assigned to noblemen and others during the visit of Elizabeth I to Croydon Palace on 19 May 1574, and drawings of arms at Croydon Palace.

Ducarel's history was eventually published with additions as 'Some account of the town, church, and archiepiscopal palace of Croydon in the county of Surrey from its foundation to the year 1783 (London: J. Nichols, 1783).

p. x. An engraved plate, pasted in, showing a brass seal found at Croydon in 1754 in the custody of Andrew Gifford D.D., and two tradesmens tokens. The plate differs from the version (plate VII, p. 72) in the edition of 1783.

Following p. 106. Two folding leaves with watercolour drawings of archiepiscopal and other coats of arms in the Guard Chamber and Great Hall of Croydon Palace (engraved versions are plates V-VI in the edition of 1783). Some captions have been added in the hand of Samuel Wayland Kershaw, Lambeth Librarian 1868-1910.

Bound in following p. 116: 'Lodgins at Croyden, the Bushope of Caunterburye's house, bestowed as followeth, the 19th of Maye 1574'. Signed 'S. Bowyer' [Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod]. An original document concerning the visit of Elizabeth I to Archbishop Matthew Parker at Croydon Palace, recording lodgings assigned to noblemen and other, 19 May 1574. The text is also transcribed by Ducarel (pp. 117-8) and is published as appendix, no XXIV in the edition of 1783. Cf. John Nichols, 'The progresses and public processions of Queen Elizabeth ...' Paper leaves, edges gilt.
Three drawings (of the Whitgift Hospital and north and south views of Croydon Palace) are stated (p. viii) to be found at the end of the book; these are missing. Engravings of them are found in the edition of 1783.
