Sentence of the Council of the North in a suit between Sir James Foljambe, kt., plaintiff, and John Barker, junior, of Newton-upon-Derwent, [co. York], 13 July 1556. It is ordered that Barker, a tenant at will of the Crown, should surrender by the Feast of St. Martin in Winter [11 November.] two tenements at Newton-upon-Derwent which Foljambe held by a lease originally granted to Sir Godfrey Foljambe by the Priory of Tickhill. 2pp. Copy by William Kildaile.

Sir Godfrey Foljambe to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Walton, [co. Derby], July 1583, explaining that the approach of the assizes had induced him and Sir John Zouche to obtain the election of a Coroner without the approval of the Earl, and at the same time objecting to the Earl's candidate named Stevenson as he did not live in the Peak District, and also strongly upholding the right of free election of Coroners. 1¼pp. Seal. Endorsed.

Godfray Foljambe, [Sheriff of co. Derby], to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Walton, [co. Derby], 16 December 1589, about the Earl's letters to the Justices of the Peace for the county directing them to find and punish vagrants, but stating that since Francis Cockayne was the only Justice in the Hundred of Scarsdale and in the High Peak he had ordered certain gentlemen and freeholders to carry out the order. 1p. Seal. Endorsed.

Derby], 4 August 1589, sending the Queen's commission, which he had received in the Earl's absence, for raising the first payment of the first subsidy for Derbyshire granted in the last Parliament, being himself unable to attend on the Earl at Belper, [co. Derby]. ½p. Endorsed.

Godfray Foljambe to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Moorhall, [co. Derby], 19 August 1589, about his suit against three men who had assaulted his servant, saying he was 'no suche a brabler or so litigeous as to trouble theym for a pokefull of Apples.' Godfray Foljambe to the Earl of Shrewsbury, from Walton, [co. Derby], 31 January 159[2/3], about a quarrel between servants of Francis Leeke of Sutton Scarsdale, [co. Derby], and the writer, which was heard in the Star Chamber, and a commission from the Court in which one of the witnesses summoned on behalf of Leeke was John Barleie, gent., a servant of the Earl. 1p. Derby], 18 January 1594/5, about the lease granted during the life of her late husband to the Earl of Shrewsbury, William Cavendish and [ ] Adderley, of lands in Aldwick [vr. Aldwark], co. York, and another lease of the manor of the same granted by [ ] Foljambe to Leonard Reresby. 1p. Endorsed.

John Coke, [rector of North Wingfield, co. Derby], to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], c. September 1589, about the proposed return of Lady [Constance] Foljambe to her house at Tupton, [co. Derby], and its evil effect on the many recusants he had converted in her absence, and asking the Earl to stay his proceedings for her release. Note by Nathaniel Johnston of information given him by James Heward that Temple Hirst, [co. York], after being given to the Earl of Lennox, and Lady Arabella [Stuart], came to the crown and was given by James 1 to Sir David Fowlis, one of the private secretaries to the King, who was descended from the house of Foulis near Edinburgh. ¼p.

York], 27 February 1589/90, stating that according to the Earl's orders he and some of the most substantial inhabitants of Batley have viewed the escutcheons in the church set up for the funeral of Sir Robert Savile, kt., and have ordered the churchwardens to be responsible for their preservation. He encloses a drawing of the arms [missing]. 1p. Address: my Lord.

Counsel's notes 'for the opening of the cause' in a suit about disputed boundaries between Spalding and Kesteven, [co. Linc.], where Captain [Thomas] Lovell was carrying out the drainage of Deeping and Spalding Fens, for which £12,000 was assigned 20 August 1600. The work had been hindered by riots in 1602 and 1603. List of deeds for proving boundaries. 2pp.

Also a note of the shortage of steel at Sheffield and the price there, no date but between 1590 and 1595. 2pp.

William Honyng to [the Earl of Shrewsbury], from Westminster, 25 January [1549/50], relating to letters from the Privy Council to the Earl concerning the manor of Nun Monkton, [co. York], and the suit between Honyng and Lord Latimer. Notifies the Earl that Parliament is to be prorogued until April for the confirmation of the peace which it is hoped the Lord Privy Seal and other commissioners will conclude with France. 2pp.

Staff.], 12 December no year, mentioning letters from the Earl from Cold Harbour, [London], but that in spite of his orders [ ] Draycott had taken young Foljambe into co. Salop., where he was married to a daughter of [ ] Trentame at Sir Andrew Corbett's house at Moerston [?Moreton Corbet]. 1p. Torn.

The lordship had formerly belonged to the monastery of Basingwerk, [co. Flint.], and was granted by Henry VIII to George, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, in 29 Henry VIII, c.1608. 1p. Endorsed.
