TitleTRINITY HOSPITAL, LONG MELFORD, SUFFOLK: STATUTES
Datec.1591
DescriptionStatutes of Trinity Hospital, Long Melford, Suffolk, founded by the will of Sir William Cordell (1522-1581), lawyer and Speaker of the House of Commons. The Hospital was established as an almshouse for twelve poor men of Melford and a Warden. n.d.
The Hospital was incorporated by letters patent of Elizabeth I, 29 June 1591. The grant of incorporation stipulated that statutes should be drawn up by the Bishops of London and Norwich and the Deans of St. Paul's and Wesminster ('Calendar of Patent Rolls 33 Elizabeth I (1500-1591)' List and Index Society vol 308, 2005). The statutes must have been completed before February 1593, the date of the death of one of the signatories, Sir Gilbert Gerrard. The signature of William Redman ('William Norwicens.') must have been added later, after his election as Bishop of Norwich in December 1594, perhaps in his capacity as Visitor of the Hospital.
