DescriptionGenealogies of French noble families, 15-16th century, neatly written in a French hand, with each name written within a circle.
With additions in the hand of George Carew, 1st Earl of Totnes (1555-1629).
The compiler was associated in England with George Carew, afterwards Earl of Totnes, and contributed to his genealogical collection, being able to write in an English secretary hand as well as in the italic hand used here (see MS. 318, ff. 164v-176r, 210v-217v).

ff. 21v-56r. Genealogies of French families, including Bourbon, Orleans, Lorraine and Coligny.
The original genealogies appear to have been written in 1598 (eight of them conclude with events in 1598, including a reference at f. 27r to Charles Emmanuel 'maintenant Duc de Savoye 1598' ). Carew's additions include references (f. 53r-v) to persons 'vivant en 1610', probably the date of his work on this manuscript.

CustodialHistoryFrom the 'Carew-Sheldon' manuscripts. Recorded [as item 116] in the 'Carew-Sheldon' catalogue dated 1664: 'Genealogiae de Regno Franciae 1398, folio' (Bodleian Library, Tanner MS. 275a, f. 9r). These manuscripts were acquired by Gilbert Sheldon (1598-1677), Archbishop of Canterbury. All, or nearly all, were previously owned by George Carew, 1st Earl of Totnes (1555-1629). See M. R.
