TitlePapers mainly concerning Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex.
DateEarly 17th century
DescriptionThey comprise:
(a) a contemporary copy of the sermon preached at St. Paul's Cross on 1 March 1601 after the execution of the Earl of Essex by William Barlow, chaplain to Archbishop Whitgift, and subsequently (1608) Bishop of Lincoln. It is entitled, 'The aunswere of or Savior" unto ye temptinge Pharisees. Math. 22.21. Giue unto Caesar the thinges of Caesar'. The sermon is endorsed in the hand of Archbishop John Whitgift, and a small emendation to the text by him (f. 53) suggests that the copy was made before the sermon was printed (STC 1454) (ff. 51-6);
(b) a paper concerning the rebellion and confession of the Earl of Essex apparently for the use of Barlow in composing his sermon and written in the same hand as part of the previous item. The author may be Whitgift and is certainly not Robert Cecil (see M. Maclure, 'The Paul's Cross sermons, 1534-1642', 1958, p. 83) (ff. 57-8);
(c) a contemporary copy of 'An apologie of therle of Essex'. The apology was dedicated to Anthony Bacon, secretary to the Earl of Essex, and written in 1598 but not published until 1603 (STC 6788). A copy of the apology with other unspecified papers concerning the affairs of the Earl of Essex in 1600 was in Archbishop Laud's study at Lambeth in 1634 (see Bodleian Library MS. Tanner 88, f. 48) (ff. 59-73);
(d) contemporary copy of a petition to Sir Francis Bacon as Lord Chancellor for an injunction in a suit between Sir John Townshend, plaintiff, and Richard Mason, gent., defendant, c. 1618 (f. 74).
AcquisitionPurchased at Sotheby's 20 February 1978 (lot 137) and given by the Friends of Lambeth Palace Library. For more information see LR/L/12 f. 230.
