TitleLECTURES ON THE SUMMA OF ST. THOMAS AQUINAS
Datelate 16th century - early 17th century
DescriptionLectures on the Summa of St. Thomas Aquinas, by Robert Bellarmine (1542-1621), afterwards Cardinal and Saint, and Nicolas Ysambert, sometimes known as Isambert (1565 or 1569-1642), Regius Professor of Controversial Theology at the Sorbonne, Paris. 1570-1618 and n.d.

In these four volumes Archbishop William Sancroft (1617-1693) rearranged and bound together several different series of lecture notes. Previously they comprised seven volumes, as follows:
Four folio volumes of notes on lectures given by Robert Bellarmine at Louvain, from the collection of Archbishop Richard Bancroft (1544-1610). These are recorded in Bancroft's catalogue as 'Roberti dictata 4or vol, folio' (LR/F/1, f. 70r). They are each written entirely or predominantly in the same hand, from which they are identifiable as the present MS. 123, pp. 1-234; MS. 125, ff. 1-198; MS. 125, ff. 199-332; MS. 125, ff. 333-522. A fifth volume of notes from the same series , and in the same hand, was shelved separately in the Bancroft collection because of its quarto size (LR/F/1, f. 72r, 'Roberti P. in 1a 2ae dictata, quarto'). This is now MS. 405.
One folio volume of notes on lectures given by Robert Bellarmine on the Prima Secundae of the Summa, from the collection of Archbishop George Abbot (1562-1633). This is recorded in Abbot's catalogue as 'Roberti dictata in primam 2dae, MS fol' (LR/F/3, f. 24r). It is now MS. 124, ff. 133-483.
One folio volume of notes on lectures given by Robert Bellarmine on the Secunda Secundae of the Summa, from the collection of Archbishop George Abbot. This is recorded in Abbot's catalogue as 'Roberti dictata in D. Thomae 2dam secundae, MS fol' (LR/F/3, f. 24r). It is now MS. 126, ff. 1-245.
One folio volume of notes on lectures, all or partly given by Nicolas Ysambert, from the collection of Archbishop George Abbot. This was recorded in Abbot's catalogue as 'in D. Thomae primam 2dae. Anonym MS fol' (LR/F/3, f. 24r). It is written in a single hand from which it is identifiable as the present MS. 123, pp. 235-351; MS. 124, ff. 1-132; MS. 126, ff. 246-287. A further volume of lecture notes in the same hand is now MS. 226.

See the separate description of each manuscript for further information.

CustodialHistoryThe folio Bellarmine volumes from the Bancroft and Abbot collections, six volumes in total, were shelved together in Cambridge University Library during the Interregnum with the shelf marks I.zeta.16-21 (Tanner MS. 268, f. 144v) and were subsequently recorded as folio vols. 37-42 (Tanner MS. 274, f. 2v). After their return to Lambeth in 1664, and until Sancroft's rebinding, they were scattered in the collection with shelf marks R.10, R.11, S.13, S.14, T.12, T.19 (LPL MS. 1037, f. 32r).
The single Ysambert volume was shelved at Cambridge with the shelf mark I.eta.5, and was subsequently folio vol. 54 (Tanner MSS. 268, f.145r and 274, f. 3r). After its return to Lambeth in 1664 it was shelved as S.8 (LPL MS. 1047, f. 3r).
