TitleARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY VERSUS SUTER
Date1776
DescriptionThe Proceedings at large in a cause between his grace, Frederick [Cornwallis], Archbishop of Canterbury, plaintiff, against John Suter, [one of the overseers of the poor in the parish of St Mary, Lambeth] defendant; which was tryed in the Court of Common Pleas at Westminster Hall by a special jury before the Rt. Hon. Sir William de Grey, Lord Chief Justice, upon a feigned issue, agreed on by the parties, on Friday December the 6th 1776. Verdict for the plaintiff. '.

The question at issue in this case was whether Lambeth Palace was liable to pay rates for the poor of the parish of Lambeth. The verdict, in favour of the Archbishop, upheld the status of Lambeth Palace as extraparochial within the Diocese of Canterbury.
MS. 1161 gives a full account of proceedings in the case, including the speeches by counsel, the examination of witnesses, and the summing up by the lord Chief Justice. Amongst the witnesses are members of the Archbishop's staff and household, Beilby Porteus, Rector of Lambeth, churchwardens, parishioners and others. The documentation includes interesting information on Lambeth Palace and its environs, including the Archbishop's servants, the burial of Archbishops, the barge house, the Lambeth dole, services in Lambeth Palace Chapel and other subjects.
