Description | Account of proceedings against Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury, in the University Church in Oxford in September 1555. This is a formal notarial account of the proceedings, recorded by John Clerk, notary public, who was present at the hearings. The account takes the form of a report from James Brooks, Bishop of Gloucester, to whom responsibility for the hearings was delegated, to Giacomo Puteo, or Giacomo Dal Pozzo (1495-1563), Inquisitor-General, in Rome. The tribunal led by Brooks was not empowered to judge, but to make the present report to Rome.
f. i recto. A later inscription [18th cent.], written within a ruled frame, serving as a title page: 'Processus contra Thomam Cranmer, Cantuar Archiepiscopum'. A.D. 1555'. A similar 'title page' is found in MS. 1135. ff. 1r-18v. Proceedings. At ff. 13r and 18r are the notarial devices of John Clerk and Christopher Smith, notaries public. f. 19. Blank, except for a drawing at f. 19r of a seated ?Anglo-Saxon king (18th cent.). |

CustodialHistory | Inscription in the hand of Andrew Coltee Ducarel, Lambeth Librarian, on f. 1r: 'July 23 1766. This MS. was presented to the MS. Library at Lambeth by Mr. Geo. Perry F.S.A.'. MS. 1135 was presented by him on the same day. George Perry, of Aldgate, London, became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in February 1766. Recorded in Andrew Coltee Ducarel's catalogue of the Lambeth manuscripts begun 1763 (LR/F/42). |
