DescriptionPapers relating to the manor of Brafferton, north Yorkshire, purchased for £5400 by the executors of the will of the natural philosopher Robert Boyle (1627-1691) in pusuance of his charitable directions. Under the rules laid down in 1697 by Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington (brother of Robert Boyle), and Henry Compton, Bishop of London, the charity was to be known as 'The charity of the Honourable Robert Boyle of the City of London deceased'. Rents from the manor of Brafferton (after the deduction of £90 per annum for the College for the Propagation of the Gospel in New England) were settled on the city of London in trust for the College of William and Mary, Virginia, for the education of native American children and to train them for the propagation of the Gospel. The College built the Brafferton building in 1723 to house its Indian school funded by the proceeds of the manor.

The papers comprise copies of rentals and accounts of the manor of Brafferton, with related correspondence, 1695-1706; accounts between Richard Musgrave, receiver of the rents of Brafferton, and Micajah Perry, merchant of London and agent of Willliam and Mary College 1695-1706; a decree in Chancery concerning the charity 9 June 1698; and rules laid down by Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Burlington, and Henry Compton, Bishop of London 21 Dec. 1697.
