DescriptionA translation into English of parts of 'Le livre des tesmoignages du thresor cache au champ' by Hendrik Jansen Van Barrefelt (c.1520-1594), called 'Hiel', prophet of the Family of Love. First published by Plantin at Antwerp c.1581 in Dutch and French editions, this work is known from its original title as Van Barrefelt's 'Akerschat', or 'Het Boeck der Ghetuygenissen vanden verborghen Acker-schat ...'.
With a writing on the Day of Judgment, calligraphically written around a ring or circle of texts.
The manuscript is an early witness to Van Barrefelt's influence in England.

ff. 1-5. blank, except for original foliation 26-30.

ff. 6r-12r. 'Pars 8, cap.o 15 - cap.o 19'. A translation of the 'Akerschat' part 8, chapters 15-19.
Begins: 'Now ye tyme being accomplished that we have yealded over our sowle to ye singuler birth of Christ...'
Ends: 'The which is very well, in theis last tymes, knowen and perseaved in ye sowle , by ye uniform Lyfe (ye Christ of God)'.

f. 12v. blank.

ff. 13r-21v. 'Pars 8 cap.o 43 - cap.o 57'. A groundly exposition of ye x commandments of Almighty God ... Translated out of Base Almayn into ffrench and out of a ffrench copy into English'. A translation of the 'Akerschat' part 8, chapters 43-57.
Begins: 'Every on (which loveth ye Truth) hath a very good occation to suffer himself to be possesed in ye Spirit (by ye spirit of ye uniform Lyfe) ...'
Ends: '... ye uniform lyfe of ye divine natur confirmeth itself as it was promised by ye Lord to ye ffather Abraham, when (for an eternall Testament) he receved ye Circomcision'.

ff. 22-49r. blank.

f. 49v. 'Howle and weepe for ye daye of ye Lord is at hand ...'. A writing on the Day of Judgment, calligraphically written around a circular diagram with the tetragrammaton (the Hebrew name of God) at the centre and around it two concentric circles of text. The inner circle of text has the words 'Ego sum primus et ego novissimus. Alpha et Omega', with biblical references. The outer circle has the the words from 2 Esdras 5:42: 'Like as ther is no slacknes of ye last even so is ther no swiftnes of ye ffirst' interpersed with 'Coronae assimilabo iudicium meum' ['I will liken my judgment unto a ring'].

f. 50r. blank.

ff. 50v-66r. 'A testament of ye Treasure hidden in ye feilde ... comprehended in 8 parts and translated out of Dutch into French and thereout into English ... The contents of ye 8 parts of this booke...'.
A translation of the summary of contents of the 'Akerschat' and its introductory text 'A preparation or introduction by ye uniforme spirit to ye booke of ye testimony of ye secret marvells of God, hidden in ye depth of ye harte of man'. One leaf is lacking after f. 62v.

Paper leaves. The volume is written from both ends of the volume; ff. 1-48 are numbered from the front and ff. 49-66 from the back.
One leaf misssing after f. 62v.
Written in a single hand in a mixture of secretary and italic scripts.
On the front pastedown are a name 'Sebastian ffranck' [? Sebastian Franck (1499-c.1543)] and two inscriptions (in the same hand as the text; see the same script used at the foot of f. 49v):

'He that will looke upon a booke to learne thereby
Chyldlyke must he his ABC learne perfectly'

'To live in Love all men amonge
geve grace o Christ, to owlde & yonge'
