DescriptionPapers of William Wake
The correspondence and papers of William Wake cover his time as Bishop of Lincoln (1705-16) and the first ten years (1716-26) of his time as Archbishop of Canterbury.
AcquisitionThe microfilms are available commercially from: World Microfilms, POB 35488, St. John's Wood, London, NW8 6WD
OriginalsThe main collection of thirty-one folio and quarto volumes were bound up in Wake's lifetime, and bequeathed to Christ Church where they have remained since Wake's death. A few other letters are found in Christ Church MSS 352, 353, 378, 541b and 679, and the relevant portions of these halves also been filmed as part of microfilm set. The manuscript volumes themselves are referred to in print in at least three different ways, any of which are acceptable. For example, the first volume may be cited in any of the following ways:

Christ Church MS 231
Wake Letters 1
Arch. W. Epist. 1

Within each volume, the sequential numbering tends to refer to items, which may consist of more than one folio. In most of the volumes the item numbering is in pen, and may be contemporary with the binding of the manuscripts. A few of the volumes bear no such item numbering, and these have been foliated more recently in pencil, some time subsequent to the publication of Norman Syke's biography of Wake in 1957.
