TitleMISCELLANY OF CATALOGUES
Datec.1660-c.1684
DescriptionSeveral catalogues bound together:

ff. i-viii. Twelve lists ('Catalogi') of books, written in a single neat hand and each followed by the signature of Gilbert Sheldon, afterwards Archbishop of Canterbury. Probably packing lists. 'Catalogi' 1-6 are each numbered 1B-6B [? B for Barrell]. 'Catalogi' 7-12 are divided into sections numbered 1T-6T. A book title heading the section 6T has a damaged marginal note '.ought of Sir S.', perhaps a purchase by Sheldon from his patron Sir Seymour Shirley, who succeeded as the 5th Bt in 1656. Initials HB at f. iv verso may be those of the compiler. The style of Sheldon's signature ('Gilb. Sheldon') suggests that the lists date from before his nomination as Bishop of London in September 1660; possibly they relate to Sheldon's move to London earlier that year.
The lists (and that at f. ix) were once thought to represent packing lists of the books of Lambeth Palace Library on their return to Lambeth in 1664 (Ann Cox-Johnson, p. 126). This was discounted by JCT Oates, 'Cambridge University Library. A history...' (Cambridge 1986), p. 313, who regarded the lists as relating to Sheldon's private library.

f. ix. Two further lists, of books and manuscripts 'in the first barrell' and 'in the second barrell'. In a different hand but on paper with a similar watermark. n.d. The elaborate hand resembles that of Ralph Snow, Sheldon's Treasurer at Lambeth, as written in the early part of his career (compare lists in his hand of 1664-5 in TG1 and TG2). The lists perhaps relate to Sheldon's move from London to Lambeth Palace on his elevation to the see of Canterbury in 1663.

ff.1-39. Author catalogue of printed books in Lambeth Palace Library. Incomplete, authors A-B only. The catalogue is in strict alphabetical order, all sizes interfiled, and includes the books bequeathed by Archbishop Sheldon which were recovered by Archbishop Sancroft in 1683. The catalogue appears to have been compiled in, or soon after, 1684, presumably from the shelf list by Paul Colomi├Ęs (LR/F/10) and employing the shelf marks as in the Colomies catalogue (although expressed here entirely in Arabic numerals, eg. 23.4.14). A draft towards this catalogue, in the same hand, covering the quartos and smaller books in the historic core of the Library (basically the collections of Archbishops Bancroft and Abbot) only, is MS. 1045.

ff. 40-144. Author catalogue of printed books in Lambeth Palace Library, 1684 or soon after. In a different hand to that at ff. 1-39. Under each letter of the alphabet the historic core of the Library (basically the collections of Archbishops Bancroft and Abbot) is recorded first, followed by the books bequeathed by Gilbert Sheldon, Archbishop of Canterbury, which were recovered from Sheldon's family by Archbishop Sancroft in 1683. Included are a number of books published after Sheldon's death which were purchased by Sancroft following his financial settlement with the family. On this see Richard Palmer, 'Sancroft versus Sheldon. A case of books', forthcoming. The catalogue was compiled in or after 1684, probably drawing on the shelf list by Paul Colomies (LR/F/10) and employing the shelf marks as in the Colomies catalogue (although expressed here entirely in Arabic numerals, eg. 23.4.14). It is in a rough, rather than strict, alphabetical order by authors, A-Z. (ie. all authors beginning with a single letter of the alphabet are together, but not in alphabetical order within that letter). The catalogue is a draft, preliminary to a catalogue in strict alphabetical order. Numbers were added by the compiler in the left hand margin as a means of sorting the entries into strict alphabetical order.
The compiler also made additions and corrections to the Colomies catalogue (eg. LR/F/10, ff. 32v, 33r, 63r) and wrote contents lists found in some of the Sheldon miscellanies, eg. modern shelf marks [ZZ]1537.1 and [ZZ]1583.26.
