TitleBANCROFT CATALOGUE
Date1612
DescriptionCatalogue of the books bequeathed by Richard Bancroft (1544-1610), Archbishop of Canterbury, to his successors in the Archbishopric, in founding Lambeth Palace Library.
The catalogue was drawn up on the initiative of Bancroft's successor, George Abbot (1562-1633), who wrote and signed the preface explaining the history and purpose of the Library. The catalogue was to serve as a permanent record of the contents of the collection for the purpose of security. Although described as a catalogue, it is strictly a shelf list. Hence, where several works are bound together, only the first appears in the catalogue, being all that was needed for checking that the volume remained present in the collection.

Two copies of the catalogue were prepared, one to be held at Lambeth and the other by the Dean and Chapter of Canterbury. Both are now in Lambeth Palace Library (LR/F/1 and LR/F/2). It is not clear which copy is which. LR/F/2 is damaged by damp throughout. Both copies are in the hand of Walter Dobson, who held the office of Receiver, who signed this copy (LR/F/2) at f. 91v.
