TitleMISCELLANEOUS PAPERS
Datec.1838-1910
DescriptionMiscellaneous papers of Lambeth Palace Library, especially papers of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48, and S.W. Kershaw, Lambeth Librarian 1868-1909. 15 files, as follows:

1. A catalogue of printed Bibles, 15-17th century, in Lambeth Palace Library. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48. n.d. With a further list of English bibles and books of common prayer, mainly in the same hand but with additional notes, including notes by SR Maitland on books taken upstairs [ie. moved to the Manuscripts Library]. n.d (on paper watermarked 1813 but written at a later date). 1 file.

2. An alphabetical list of persons who replied to a circular. With a list of places. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48. The circular is probably that which was sent to the clergy by Maitland around 1843 asking for details of English books before 1550 and foreign books before 1520 in parish and other libraries. A photocopy of this printed circular (original pasted into a copy in the Library of Maitland's 'A list of some of the early printed books in the Archiepiscopal Library at Lambeth', published 1843) has been added to this file. 1 file.

3. An alphabetical index to the names of correspondents who have written to Lambeth Palace Library. n.d. (paper watermarked 1844). In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48, and with brief notes in Maitland's hand on the subject of each letter. 1 file.

4. Lists of the places of publication of incunabula and books printed 1500-36. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48. n.d. (on paper watermarked 1837). 1 file.

5. Lists of printed books, 15-17th century, in Lambeth Palace Library, arranged by places of publication, with shelf-marks. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48. n.d. (on paper watermarked 1844). 1 file.

6. A list of shelf-marks of books recorded in SR Maitland, 'An index of such English books, printed before the year MDC ... in the Archiepiscopal Library at Lambeth' (London, 1845). The list is in two series, folio and octavo, in shelf-mark order. 1 file.

7. A list of books printed in England 1550-1600, arranged by the names of printers. With shelf-marks in Lambeth Palace Library. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48. n.d. (on paper watermarked 1839). 1 file.

8. Lists of English printed books 1600-1633 'for the catalogue'. With shelf-marks in Lambeth Palace Library. Mainly in the hand of S.R. Maitland. n.d. (mainly on paper watermarked 1842). 1 file. Cf. LR/F/29.

9. A shelf list recording the shelf-marks of the former 64 folio presses of Lambeth Palace Library. On 64 sheets of thin paper (one for each former press), with the shelf-marks partly printed. After each shelf-mark a new shelf-mark has been written, so that the list appears intended to serve as a concordance. The work appears to have been left incomplete, with very many new shelf marks not assigned, and may represent a re-arrangement of the collection never fully implemented. The new shelf marks (press and shelf only in the form 10.5 etc ) are not of the kind implemented in the copy of the Bodleian catalogue which served as the Library's catalogue from c. 1869. The hand appears to be that of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48.

10. Lists of 'books wanting' and 'slips wanting', the latter probably referring to the Library's shelf list on paper slips compiled during the Librarianship of S.R. Maitland. In the hand of Maitland and his assistant. 1847 and n.d.

11. An index of shelf-marks in Lambeth Palace Library (in shelf-mark order), followed by numbers as found writen in pencil in Maitland's catalogue of English books printed before 1600 in Lambeth Palace Library (LR/F/69). The shelf marks are written on labels pasted on to newspaper printed in 1842. In the hand of the assistant of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48.

12. Miscellaneous papers from the librarianship of Samuel Roffey Maitland, Lambeth Librarian 1838-48.

13. Miscellaneous papers from the librarianship of Samuel Wayland Kershaw, Lambeth Librarian 1868-1910, comprising correspondence 1880-1906; notes on cataloguing (n.d., on paper watermarked 1860); list of shelf marks apparently for missing books and for books requiring binding or lettering, with a note on work done in Aug. 1868; a printed advertisement for 'Art treasures of Lambeth Palace Library' and other works by Kershaw printed 1873-80; three letters to Archbishop Tait and to Kershaw from Joseph Brigstocke Sheppard (1827-1895), historian and keeper of Canterbury Cathedral records, on the transfer to Lambeth from Canterbury of archiepiscopal records, including records of visitations 16-18th century, Dec. 1879-Jan. 1880 (for a report by Sheppards on records at Canterbury Jan. 1880, see MS 2797, ff. 57-78); a circular listing pamphlets and papers in the Library on the monastic remains of England and Wales and calling for donations, 1881; four printed versions of the Regulations of Lambeth Palace Library, made in pursuance of the Orders in Council of 1869 and 1880; printed rules for lending books, 1881; an offer of photographs and prints from James Cubitt, 1908; and an undated list of paintings in the Guard Room of Lambeth Palace, with a few notes in Kershaw's hand.

14. Further papers from the librarianship of Samuel Wayland Kershaw, Lambeth Librarian 1868-1910, found loose in LR/A/5, including a receipt for the production by Stuart A. Moore and R.E.G. Kirk of a list of the court rolls [LR/F/61], 1880; a list of 'curiosities' in the Library (n.d., paper watermarked 1881); lists of printed books purchased or otherwise acquired 1875-1909; correspondence on purchases 1905-9; and notes for his successor on 'indexing and rearrangement', Jan. 1910.

15. A list, on a single sheet, of the Lambeth Librarians, from A.C. Ducarel in 1757 to William Stubbs in 1862, with notes and queries. The list is incomplete. The list was found in a copy of E.W. Brayley, 'A concise account, historical and descriptive, of Lambeth Palace', 1806, once owned and grangerised by William Stubbs, Lambeth Librarian 1862-8. The list is not in Stubbs' hand but includes an addition by him on the librarianship of C.A. Ogilvie.
