DescriptionPapers relating to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners and their maintenance of Lambeth Palace Library.

1. Act of Parliament, 29 and 30 Victoria cap 111, empowering the Ecclesiastical Commissioners to defray the cost of maintaining the Library and the custody of the books. 1866. Printed.

2. Copy of 'The London Gazette', 10 August 1869, including (pp. 4433-4) an Order in Council of 7 August 1869 made in pursuance of the above Act, authorising the Commissioners to maintain the fabric of the Library, conserve the books and manuscripts, and make provision of £150 per annum for its running costs, subject to arrangements for public access. Printed. With a covering letter to Archbishop Tait from the Commissioners 18 August 1869.

3. Printed copies of the Order in Council of 7 August 1869, and of a further Order in Council of 28 June 1880 providing for increased public access to the Library by raising the level of the Commissioners' provision to £250 per annum.

4. Copy of 'The London Gazette', 15 March 1910, including (pp. 1861-1862) an Order in Council of 15 March 1910 raising the level of the Commissioners' provision to £350 per annum.

5. File of correspondence between Archbishop Davidson and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners concerning increased provision for Lambeth Palace Library, 1913. Included is a printed Order in Council of 9 May 1913 empowering the Commissioners to raise provision for the Library beyond £350 per annum at their discretion, and an agreement by the Commissioners, dated 21 June 1913, raising provision to £550 per annum on condition that the Librarian should serve full time in his post. Also included is a letter to Archbishop Davidson from the Librarian, Claude Jenkins, reporting his consequent resignation as curate at St. Martin-in-the-Fields, 21 June 1913.

6. Correspondence between Archbishop Davidson and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners agreeing that provision for the Library should continue at £550 per annum notwithstanding the death of the former Librarian S.W. Kershaw (to whose pension the Commissioners had contributed £100 per annum included in their provision of £550 per annum). 1914.
