TitleHowley, William (1766-1848)
Date1710-1841
DescriptionLetters and papers including a letterbook and forty volumes of correspondence and papers relating to the administration of the diocese of London. Much of this correspondence is concerned with parochial matters, although a considerable amount was generated from Howley's positions as dean of the Chapels Royal, governor of Highgate School, and visitor of the East India College in Haileybury, Herts.

Volumes 1-4 concern the Church of England overseas, and include the licensing and supervision of Anglican chaplains on the continent of Europe, and relations with the colonies, especially in Australia, Canada, India and the West Indies. The abolition of slavery and the religious education of slaves form much of the subject matter.

The papers also include a commonplace book, two 18th-century memoranda books of Highgate School and Chapel which were submitted to Howley in the course of his investigation into the use of the endowment funds, and five volumes of episcopal and archidiaconal visitation returns, 1815-[23].
ArrangementMost of the correspondence has been arranged alphabetically by correspondent or subject. The four volumes of foreign correspondence had been arranged by the S.P.G. according to place.
FindingAidsCatalogue descriptions based on typescript index compiled by library assistants, and revised and edited by Victoria Peters, Assistant Archivist, February 1993. All correspondents were indexed and there was selective indexing of places, institutions and subjects.

The letters and papers were addressed either to the bishop or to his secretary, Christopher Hodgson. This distinction was not retained in the index since the secretary was acting in the name of the bishop.

Catalogue descriptions of the visitation returns (vols. 48-52) based on the typescript index of London diocesan visitation returns.

CustodialHistoryThe majority of the Howley papers were deposited in Lambeth Palace Library by the Church Commissioners in 1960. A few stray papers were subsequently deposited by the Guildhall Library in 1977. Most of the foreign correspondence was transferred from Fulham Palace in July 1869 by John Jackson, bishop of London, to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, bound up in 1884, and later given to Lambeth Palace Library by the United Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in November 1981 (4 volumes, now Howley 1-4).
AcquisitionThe papers of William Howley, bishop of London, 1813-28, form part of the papers of the bishops of London, now known as the Fulham Papers, which were originally at Fulham Palace.
