TitleHouse of Lords
Date1964-1973
DescriptionCorrespondence and papers created and accumulated by Ellison during his service in the House of Lords. As Bishop of Chester and later Bishop of London he was one of Spiritual Peers; the 26 bishops of the established Church of England who serve in the House of Lords along with the Lords Temporal. He also became the spokesman for all church legislative matters in the House of Lords, where his meticulous preparation and grasp of detail made a great contribution. He was a uniquely respected figure there, and there was some talk of a life peerage when he retired, but lack of precedent was too strong; instead he was appointed KCVO.
