TitleFREDERICK CORNWALLIS, ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY
Date1775-1805
DescriptionLambeth Palace rating. Correspondence and papers in the case brought by Frederick Cornwallis (1713-1783), Archbishop of Canterbury, plaintiff, against John Suter, one of the overseers of the poor in the parish of St Mary, Lambeth, defendant. The case was heard in the Court of Common Pleas at Westminster Hall by a special jury before Sir William de Grey, Lord Chief Justice, on 6 December 1776.

The question at issue in this case was whether Lambeth Palace was liable to pay rates for the poor of the parish of Lambeth. The verdict, in favour of the Archbishop, upheld the status of Lambeth Palace as extraparochial within the Diocese of Canterbury and not liable to pay rates to the parish of Lambeth.

The papers for the most part are those of John Vernon, of Lincoln's Inn, as attorney to Archbishop Cornwallis. On the conclusion of the case he left papers with Archbishop Cornwallis (see ff. 258-9). An account of the case by Beilby Porteus, Rector of Lambeth and afterwards Bishop of London, was added in 1805 (ff. 260-283).

A full account of proceedings in the case, including the speeches by counsel, the examination of witnesses, and the summing up by the Lord Chief Justice is in MS. 1161. Amongst the witnesses are members of the Archbishop's staff and household, Beilby Porteus, Rector of Lambeth, churchwardens, parishioners and others. The documentation includes information on Lambeth Palace and its environs, including the Archbishop's servants, the burial of Archbishops, the barge house, the Lambeth dole, services in Lambeth Palace Chapel and other subjects.
