TitleChief Secretary's papers
DescriptionPapers of the Chief Secretary of the Board. Typically a file can contain correspondence, minutes and notes from meetings attended by the Secretary, articles, reports, press cuttings, and papers gathered by the Secretary as means of building a silo of information on topics which fell under the BSR radar. Some of the files are substantial, others contain only several folios.
AdminHistoryThe Secretary of BSR was the key position within the organisation, as it was through him that the majority of the work of the Board radiated. Gathering and disseminating information was central, with relationships fostered with agencies and individuals within and beyond the Church facilitating the former, and maintaining close links with both Board members and and those in working parties enabling the latter. The Secretary would also generally occupy the position of Secretary in any Working Party set up by the Board, and represent the Board by sitting on a number of external Committees and Trusts. Writing briefs for Bishops ahead of House of Lords debates, and being a source of general source of information for clergy were also tasks of the Secretary.

The position of Secretary of the Board was held by the following individuals:

- Revd. G.R.Dunston, (Acting Secretary), 1 Jan 1958-Oct 1958

- E.A.O.G. Wedell, Nov 1958-Jun 1960

- Edwin Barker, M.B.E, 1961-1972

- Giles Ecclestone, Nov 1972 -1982

- Preb. John Gladwin, Sep 1982-1989

- David Skidmore, April 1989-2003
