CreatorNameBritish Council of Churches
AdminHistoryThe decision to form the WCC was taken at the 1937 Oxford and Edinburgh Conferences. This organisation was to be a merger of the Faith and Order Movement and Life and Work Movement organisations. Its offical establishment was deferred with the outbreak of the second world war and it was formally brought in to existence at its 1st Assembly in Amsterdam in 1948. At this Assembly, delegates of 147 churches met to merge the two movements. During the war years, existing ecumenical work of the interim body was carried out by a Provisional Committee and a smaller Administrative Committee.

The BCC is 'in association with' the WCC.
