DescriptionDocuments in the case Roberts v Abrey and Dominus Pope Blount, exhibited in the Court of Arches.
The case relates to the rectory of Ridge, Herts., which was held by the family of Sir Thomas Pope (d. 1559), of Tittenhanger in the parish of Ridge, founder of Trinity College, Oxford. His widow Elizabeth (nee Blount) married Sir Hugh Paulet (d. 1573) and died in 1593.
ff. 57r-59r exhibited in the Easter term 1638; originals returned for the use of Sir Thomas Pope Blount [Sir Thomas Pope Blount (d. 1639) of Tittenhanger] 30 Oct 1638. ff. 80r-95v exhibited 'prox Valentini 1638' [Feb. 1639] and originals returned to Mr. Thomas Pope Blount [probably Thomas Pope Blount (d. 1654), son of Sir Thomas] May 1639.
ff. 57r-58v. Assignment of a lease of the tithes of Ridge, Herts., by Robert Longe, of St. Michael, St. Albans, to Henry Wrenn, yeoman, of St. Albans, 13 Sept. 1536. The tithes were previously leased to Robert Longe for 31 years by St. Albans Abbey on 12 April 1533.
ff. 58v-59r. Bond. Robert Longe bound to the Abbot of At. Albans Abbey to pay a stipend to the Vicar of Ridge if the revenues of the vicarage are insufficient; Longe to occupy the vicarage. 24 May 1533.
ff. 80r-81v. Lease by Elizabeth, Lady Paulet, to Pope Blount, gentleman, of Tittenhanger [Sir Thomas Pope Blount] of the rectory of Ridge, for 80 years. 20 June 1589.
ff. 81v-86r. Agreement between Elizabeth, Lady Paulet, Trinity College Oxford, and Margaret Saunders, widow and executrix of Richard Blunt [Blount], of London, who had bequeathed £100 to Trinity College Oxford to maintain a poor scholar. Lady Paulet, having received the £100 bequest from Margaret Saunders to assist her purchase of the rectory and advowson of Ridge, is to lease the rectory and advowson to Trinity College for 99 years, the income to be used by the College to maintain a poor scholar and for additional purposes. 1 April 1590.
ff. 86r-89r. Lease by Elizabeth I to Elizabeth, Lady Paulet, of all tithes in Tittenhanger and Colney and elsewhere in the parish of St. Peter in St. Albans, formerly belonging to the office of almoner of the monastery of St. Albans, and all tithes of the manors of Tittenhanger and Napesbury, for 21 years, 22 Feb. 1580. Recites a previous lease of the same to Sir Hugh and Elizabeth, Lady Paulet, for 21 years, dated 18 Feb. 1569 (on this see Calendar of the patent rolls, Elizabeth I, vol 4, no. 2244).
